A half-day focussing on the stuff that will really make a difference to people with type 2 diabetes fully updated to incorporate the NEW NICE Guidelines from 2022. We will cover everything assessing and managing risk, diagnosis, management and high impact lifestyle support, spotting emergencies and choosing drugs.

In this half-day event on ‘Older people and frailty’, we will explore key concepts and skills which are crucial in supporting our older patients - both at home and in nursing home settings.

Using a combination of teaching strategies, live interactive cases, polls and discussion we will explore:

• What is normal ageing…and what isn’t?
• The terrible triplets: frailty, multimorbidity and polypharmacy
• How to do a really good medication review and feel good about deprescribing!
• The 3D’s of deterioration: delirium, depression and dementia
• Common primary care problems: falls, recurrent infections and requests for antibiotics.

And we will tie all this together with real-life case scenarios and tools you can use once you are back at the surgery, on home visits or out in nursing homes the next day.

Annual BLS/AED training is mandatory in primary care. The fact that life threatening emergencies are rare makes a regular update extra important so that as individuals and teams we can feel confident to face them. This online course offers a level 2 update including paediatrics and can be used as individuals and practice teams. It offers all the taught content and scenarios you need to apply your knowledge and skills in practice. Whilst not essential, it will work best used alongside hands on practice with a mannequin.

What's covered?

• Using the DRsABCD approach with someone who appears collapsed.
• Basic Life Support algorithms as per the Resuscitation Council UK guidelines.
• Supporting breathing with rescue breaths.
• Use of the Automated external defibrillator (AED).
• Oxygen cylinders; connection and usage.
• Recovery position.
• Choking.
• Paediatric modifications.
• Pregnancy modifications.
• Compression only CPR.
• Electrocution.

Safeguarding is important and mandatory but often treated as a tick box exercise. We think it can and should be done better so just like on our courses - we focus on real cases and practical stuff which will actually help you in your daily practice.

This level 3 adult and child safeguarding is worth at least 2 CPD credits (and if you do it with your team and complete the reflective learning activities, it could be worth at least 4 CPD credits and count towards your participatory requirement).

Foundation Mental Health Modules (2 hours)

1. Communication microskills
Great mental health care needs a solid foundation of excellent communication. And this includes communicating with ourselves! Learn more about mental health communication and some helpful microskills you can take back to practice right away. The video is broken down into chapters so you can tackle it in smaller
chunks, to suit your schedule.

2. Understanding Mental Health
Mental health plays a part in every area of primary care. Taking time to understand mental health is essential, and recognising how the whole team can contribute is key. We’ll discuss practical ways to assess mental health, and how we can use skills such as active listening and wellbeing strategies. We’ll also focus on common mental health problems, suicidal thoughts and severe mental illness.

Child and Adolescent Mental Health Course (3 hours). We will cover:

• Assessing children and adolescents with mental health concerns
• Developing your skills in how to assess and support young people with self-harm
• How to talk about and assess suicide risk
• Building an understanding of how depression and anxiety should be managed in young people
• Spotting and referring eating disorders
• The impact of neurodiversity and adverse childhood experiences on mental health and wellbeing
• Some key microskills to support young people while they wait to be seen.

Mental Health Online Course (6 hours). We will cover:

• The ‘mental health condition families’ - looking at them in a new way.
• Navigating different diagnostic options and explaining these with a narrative that helps patients to get better.
• Therapies and drug dilemmas: everything from psychological and talking therapy, to drug-based treatments and self-care and promoting physical health.
• Creating new narratives: for a range of mental health disorders we consider the language we could use to help patients understand their experience?
• Depression and anxiety - focusing on practical skills we can use with patients, promoting self-care, great resources you can share, and pitfalls to avoid.
• Strategies for common challenges, like repeat attenders and personality disorder.
• ‘Microskills’ like behavioural activation, problem solving and self-compassion that you can start using with patients the next day!
• The ‘risky’ stuff: risk assessment, mental health ‘emergencies’ and the impact of addiction. Special groups including children and the perinatal period.
• Well-being of health professionals and how we can look after ourselves.
