What will be covered?

This course focusses on helping patients to make or sustain behaviour changes. Nearly all of our face to face consultations have patient behaviour atthe heart. Either to make a change (stop smoking, consume fewer calories, drinkless alcohol etc.) or to sustain a behaviour (take the tablets, follow the post-op advice etc.). Traditional doctor/nurse advice ("You should do xyz...") tends to produce resistance ("I can't do that because..."). And once this sets in, it actually makes failure more likely.

Our goal is to help you find and overcome difficulties and to leave you with practical ideas to enhance your own telephone contacts with patients.

There ARE approaches that can avoid patient resistance, of which Motivational Interviewing is the best known and best researched. It has also been shown to be more effective than "business as usual" in primary care. Although full training takes many days, some of the key techniques can be learned quickly and take only a couple of minutes to use, thus being very useful for primary care clinicians.

Delegates are invited to explore their own challenges, compare notes with colleagues and learn some theory - and then practise some important and useable techniques in small group structured exercises. You should leave with a number of new ideas, words and
phrases to make more headway with patients - and to make these consultations less frustrating for all parties!
