What will be covered?

Within the AKT specific section of the course we cover:
We prefer to see exams as 'mark grabbing exercises' and then help you to work out how to grab as many of them as you can!
High yield topics
The key topics which tend to come up frequently in the exam.
Statistics (evidence interpretation)
Helping you to feel more comfortable with critical appraisal and evidence based clinical practice.
Organisational issues
These questions are renowned to be difficult but getting them right can make the difference between passing and failing the AKT.
Within the main GP Update Course (which you will join until
3pm), we discuss the results of the most important and relevant research
papers, placing them in the context of all the research evidence in each area
and the needs of primary care.
We will cover all the big chronic diseases including:
- Cardiovascular
disease
- Diabetes
- Respiratory
medicine
- Mental health
The Handbook also covers:
- Neurology
- Gastroenterology
- Musculoskeletal
medicine
- Cancer
- Sexual
health
- Health in
older age
- Child and
adolescent health
- Women's
health
- Men's health
And from these we will pick the most useful and important
information during the day.
Plus, we will cover some themes during the day, focusing on
the latest evidence in relation to particular groups including:
- Child and adolescent health
- Women's health
- Men's health
At each stage we will focus on the latest evidence and what
it means to General Practice.
What we don't cover.
If you want a course where you spend a large part of the day
sitting mock exams then this is NOT the course for you. Our key strength is
communicating relevant information in an efficient and effective (and humorous)
manner.
Practise questions are vital. Doing questions from websites,
books and RCGP Innovait Journal are all useful in preparing for
the exam. They can give you good mock exam practice plus the necessary
analytics afterwards which will help direct your learning to the specific areas
you need to improve - but we won't be doing many on the day!
